Musimy porozmawiać o penisie

Teoretyczne zainteresowanie penisem, pomimo jego ambiwalentnej funkcji w psychoanalizie, gdzie wspomina się o nim, aby go wymazać (wykastrować jak u Freuda) lub uczynić wymazywalnym (jak u Lacana, gdzie obiektem zainteresowania jest fallus a nie penis), wykazują dziś właściwie tylko porn studies, historia medycyny i antropologia, gdzie penis jako organ działa lub nie działa skutecznie w rejestrze wizualnym bądź medycznym. Biorąc na warsztat dyskusje teoretyczne, które niemal automatycznie wpisują penisa w kontekst wsteczności, heteronormatywności, seksizmu, cispłciowości i odrywają od jakiegokolwiek radykalizmu, nasza dyskusja ma za zadanie odsłonić i zrekonstruować możliwość istnienia nie-fallicznego, porowatego penisa przeciw jego fallogocentrycznej ekonomii wpisanej zarówno w seksualność, jak i epistemologię. Zadanie to zrealizujemy poprzez „perwersyjną lekturę” tekstów medycznych i filozoficznych, a także obrazów wykraczających poza kolonialną heteronowoczesność.

We Need to Talk About the Penis

Besides its ambiguous presence in psychoanalysis, albeit mentioned and erased (or castrated by Sigmund Freud) or rendered erasable (as in Jacques Lacan where the Phallus, rather than the penis is the focus), the only few exceptions that have had a theoretical investment in the penis are porn studies, medical history or anthropology where the penis-organ either performs well or poorly from visual or medical perspectives. Taking to task theoretical discussions that almost automatically relegate the penis to something backward, heteronormative, sexist, cis-gendered and unradical, the talk aims to uncover and reconstruct possibilities of an un-phallic and indeed porous penis against its overrepresented phallogocentric economy in terms both of sexuality and epistemology, through a “perverse reading” of medicinal and philosophical texts and images that situate outside of colonial heteromordernity.

Zairong Xiang jest autorem książki Queer Ancient Way: A Decolonial Exploration (punctum books, 2018). Był współkuratorem “2021 Guangzhou Image Triennial” jako członek Hyperimage Group w Guangdong Museum of Art. Kuratorował “weekend mniejszościowego kosmopolityzmu” w HKW Haus der Kulturen der Welt w Berlinie (2018) i był redaktorem jego katalog: minor cosmopolitan: Thinking Art, Politics and the Universe Together Otherwise (Diaphanes 2020). Obecnie przygotowuje, razem z Anselmem Franke, Elisą Giuliano, Denise Ryner i Claire Tancons projekt wystawy-publikacji Ceremony (Burial of an Undead World). Uczy na wydziale literatury porównawczej i historii sztuki na Duke Kunshan University. Jest też dyrektorem artystycznym chińsko-amerykańskiego uniwersytetu łączonego. Obecnie pracuje nad dwoma projektami książkowo-wystawienniczymi, odwołującymi się kolejno do pojęć „transdualizmu” i „podróbki” na globalnym Południu, szczególnie w Ameryce Południowej i Chinach. Był stypendystą ICI-Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry (2014 – 2016) i DFG Research Training Group minor cosmopolitanisms na uniwersytecie w Potsdamie (2016-2020). Zairong Xiang is author of Queer Ancient Way: A Decolonial Exploration (punctum books, 2018). He has co-curated the “2021 Guangzhou Image Triennial” as a member of the Hyperimage Group at Guangdong Museum of Art. He has curated the “minor cosmopolitan weekend” at the HKW Haus der Kulturen der Welt (2018) and edited its catalogue minor cosmopolitan: Thinking Art, Politics and the Universe Together Otherwise (Diaphanes 2020). He is currently co-curating the exhibition-auditorium-publication project Ceremony (Burial of an Undead World) with Anselm Franke, Elisa Giuliano, Denise Ryner, and Claire Tancons. He teaches Comparative Literature and Art History at Duke Kunshan University and is also the Sino-US joint-venture university’s Associate Director of Art. He is working on two book-exhibition projects, respectively dealing with the concepts of “transdualism” and “counterfeit” in the Global South especially Latin America and China. He was Fellow at the ICI-Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry (2014 – 2016) and postdoctoral fellow of the DFG Research Training Group minor cosmopolitanisms at Potsdam University (2016-2020).
